Yellow - Orange Grading is on Sunday!

Yesterday I had my Jujitsu training. I arrived early and practised with my partner as my grading to the next belt (Orange) is this Sunday! When our lesson began we started off with our warm-ups which consist of stretching and exercises such as crunches and push ups. Next we did Ukemi (breakfalls), there are four basic ukemi : mae ukemi ( Front Breakfall ) , Ushiro Ukemi ( Back Breakfall ), Mae Mawari Ukemi (My fav : Front Rolling Breakfall ) and Yoko Ukemi (Side Breakfall).

After the warm ups we did throws. We started off doing the white belt throw , O Goshi (Hip Throw). Next, we split up into groups according to our belt and learnt our kata ( forms ).

There are these waza (techniques) in kata:
1. Daichi Waza (Stances)
2. Tsugi Waza (Punches)
3. Geri Waza (Kicks)
4. Nage Waza (Throws)
5. (Grappling)
6. Kensetsu Waza (Armlocks)
7. Taisabaki Waza (Movements)
8. Jigo Waza ( Combined Techniques)

Nearing the end of class we did throws again where we had to go around and throw everyone once with O Goshi as fast as possible. After that we cooled down and bowed to the sempai ( teacher's assistant ) and to each other.

I stayed back awhile to revise the kata.

Background

Hi! My name is Jeremy. I set up this blog as part of my NYAA which I am doing this year. I will log the everything I do and learn as I progress throughout the whole journey. I am learning Jujitsu, a martial art that which Judo originated from. It was originally one of the styles of combat the Samurai in the past used.

I started learning it in the middle of last year as I wanted to learn how to defend myself and build up my endurance and I am currently at the second belt ( Yellow). The first few months I started learning the basics such as breakfalling. Breakfalling is used to stop yourself from getting hurt if you fall like when someone throws you, If you do not breakfall properly you will injure youself. It can also be used in everyday life. An example of this is when you trip or fall from your bike. You can perform mae ukemi ( front breakfall ) or mae mawari ukemi ( front rolling breakfall ). We also learn other techniques such as throws, armlocks and grappling moves. Throws consist of moves where you bring your opponent to the ground so as to continue with a grappling move. Grappling was thought up as most fights will got to the ground. The moves may pin, lock or choke your opponent into submission. Armlocks are used for restraining. This is really useful in real life as you wouldn't want to seriously hurt someone if they attack you.

Learning Japanese words is also a part of the Jujitsu experience as most of the commands and techniques are in Japanese. Also respect is a crucial aspect of Jujitsu as you must learn to respect your Sensei ( teacher ) , your Dojo ( Training Area ), Your Judo Gi ( Uniform ), your training partners and ultimately yourself.
